The immediate consequence of the vote was that May was given until 12 April to announce that Britain would leave the EU without a deal, or that the country would ask for a long delay in starting negotiations on another type of Brexit deal. All 27 EU countries have had to accept a long delay. On 11 April, the EU and Britain agreed to extend Brexit by six months, with 31 October being the new exit date. The vote in the House of Commons finally took place on the evening of January 15, 2019. The proposed Brexit deal was rejected by 432 votes to 202, 202 votes in and 16 abstentions. The difference of 230 votes was the biggest defeat in the House of Commons since the beginning of British parliamentary democracy more than a century ago. The previous record of 1924, where the difference was „only” 166 votes, was more than beaten. By May`s Conservative Party, 198 MPs voted in favour and 112 against. Three Labour MPs voted in favour of the deal. On 22 October, the British Parliament agreed to review the Brexit Act.
But she decided it took longer than the British Prime Minister had proposed. This means that it is no longer possible to withdraw with an agreement on the planned date of Brexit, 31 October. The Brexit deal will not come into force until the Brexit law is passed by the British Parliament. Prime Minister Boris Johnson wins the British general election. It is therefore likely that the Brexit deal will soon be adopted. If the British Parliament approves the agreement, the European Parliament can vote on it in January. Two days after the final deal was voted on, the House of Commons voted to delay Brexit by 412 votes to 202. The European Commission, through President Jean-Claude Juncker, insisted that the United Kingdom refer to this article as soon as possible. The European Parliament has agreed. However, Cameron`s successor, May, has made it clear that she will not do so until the end of 2016. It first wanted to define its policy and set up negotiating teams. In May`s cabinet, David Davis has been appointed secretary of state after leaving the European Union, meaning he would lead preparations and negotiations for Brexit.
In July 2016, former European Commissioner Michel Barnier was appointed, on behalf of the European Commission, as chief negotiator for exit negotiations with the UK. He will lead a new department, the working group responsible for preparing and conducting negotiations with the United Kingdom, in accordance with Article 50 of the TUE. Guy Verhofstadt, MEP and former Prime Minister of Belgium, becomes a negotiator on behalf of the European Parliament. The UK government and the 27 other EU member states approve the draft agreement. On the evening of Sunday, December 20, 2020, the VPRO aired on NPO2 the 9th episode of the Dutch documentary series „In Europe: History taken in the red hand”, presented by Geert Mak. It was Brexit. The title is „Won and lost everything.” British officials, who spoke to people who voted for Brexit and now regretted it, say opponents of major political bodies such as the EU have managed to address millions of angry and disappointed Britons who no longer voted and were abandoned by political parties through the media. Dominic Cummings` name should be mentioned here. The VPRO guide says as an introduction: it is only now that many Brexit voters discover that they have been misused for the power games of the political elite.
